In 2025, federal, state and local public health and regulatory officials investigated a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections associated with eggs produced by Country Eggs LLC.

The investigation was opened under outbreak code 2507CAJEG-2 on July 30, 2025. The investigation was triggered by reports of illnesses among dining patrons of a Japanese steak house chain, Chubby Cattle. The restaurant chain was previously seen in the first iteration of outbreak code 2503MLJEG-2 where patients reported consuming a raw egg dipping sauce. However, patients in 2507CAJEG-2 reported consuming a beef tartar dish topped with a raw egg.

FDA and California traceback information in both outbreaks was ultimately sourced to Country Eggs LLC. Given this and the genetic proximity of cases across both investigations to each other, the two events were combined under outbreak code 2503MLJEG-2 on August 21, 2025.

By investigation close, a total of 105 cases in 14 states were detected. Illnesses started on January 7, 2025 to August 5, 14, 2025. Of the 82 people with information available, 19 were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

FDA conducted an inspection at Country Eggs, LLC, which included environmental sample collection. Three environmental samples were positive for Salmonella. WGS showed that the samples from the environment were the same as the sick people in this outbreak.

On August 27, 2025, Country Eggs, LLC recalled large brown cage-free “sunshine yolks” or “omega-3 golden yolks” eggs. These eggs had sell-by dates from July 1, 2025, through September 18, 2025, with the code “CA 7695” on the cartons.

The investigation was closed on November 20, 2025.
