In November 2025, CDC and public health officials in several states investigated an outbreak of Salmonella infections associated with contact with pet bearded dragons.

A total of 20 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Cotham were reported from 14 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 26, 2025, to October 22, 2025. Of 17 people with information available, 9 (53%) were hospitalized. One death in Kentucky was reported.

Of 17 people interviewed about animals they came into contact with during the week before they got sick, 9 (53%) reported contact with bearded dragons. Most people had contact at home while caring for bearded dragons such as touching the animals or their enclosures. feeding them, and putting them on their laps, heads, or shoulders. At least one child did not touch the bearded dragons and may have been exposed through indirect contact with a reptile in the home.

The investigation was closed on December 19, 2025.
