In August 2026, CDC, FDA and public health officials in several states investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to jalapeno peppers. As of August 19, 2026, a total of 431 cases were reported from 32 states. Fifty-seven people had been hospitalized. No one died. Dates of illness onset ranged from June 19, 2026 to August 2, 2026.

Epidemiologic and traceback data show that jalapeno peppers jalapeno peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors were the source of this outbreak. As of August 10, 2026, it did not appear that Coast Citrus Distributors supplied jalapenos directly to grocery stores.

On August 8, 2026, Taylor Fresh Foods recalled jalapeno peppers. Stores that received Taylor Fresh Foods recalled products include Hannaford, Kroger, Stop and Shop, Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart and Whole Foods.

Twenty-eight illness clusters were identified at Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA locations in 8 states. Meal dates ranged from June 14, 2026 to July 16, 2026. After being notified of the outbreak, Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA stopped serving affected jalapeno peppers.

Based on WGS analysis, bacteria from 428 people's samples had no predicted antimicrobial resistance. Bacteria from 3 people's samples were predicted to be resistant to one or more of the following antibiotics: amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ampicillin, azithromycin, ceftriaxone, cefoxitin, ceftiofur, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Bacteria from 1 of these samples also had predicted nonsusceptibility to ciprofloxacin.
