On August 20, 2026, Minnesota public health and agriculture officials issued a public health alert warning consumers not to eat alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands due to a multistate outbreak of multiple strains of Shiga toxin E. coli (STEC) and Salmonella infections.

This announcement was followed by announcements from the FDA and the CDC on August 21, 2026. STEC serotypes were listed to include E. coli O26:H11, E. coli O103:H25, and E. coli O168:H8. The Salmonella serotype was listed as Agona.

Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC and state partners, a total of 55 people infected with one of the outbreak strains had been reported by 15 states. Some people were infected with more than one outbreak strain. Forty-six people were infected with E. coli, 7 people were infected with Salmonella and 2 people were infected with both Salmonella and E. coli. There were 4 hospitalizations and no deaths. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 31, 2026 to August 8, 2026.
