1990 Outbreak of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, Alaska
Four clusters of illness caused by paralytic shellfish poisoning resulted from the consumption of butter clams, or mussels, that had been harvested in the Alaska Peninsula or Kodiak Island. One person died from cardiac arrest. He had eaten 25-30 clams and clam broth. Fresh shellfish samples from the region showed the presence of the paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin.
