1994-1995 Multistate Outbreak of Norovirus Associated with Apalachicola Bay Oysters
Thirty four separate clusters of illness were associated with eating oysters that had been harvested in Apalachicola Bay in late December, 1994. Oysters were shipped to other states, but additional clusters of illness had only been reported from Georgia. Fecal coliform testing of the water from the bay was within acceptable limits. During December, the bay was heavily used by recreational boaters and commercial fisherman who could have contaminated the water by dumping sewage into it. Seven illness were confirmed as being caused by norovirus. The estimated total number of illnesses was not provided.
