1998 Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium Infections linked to Chicken Nuggets, Australia
An outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 12 occurred in South Australia. The epidemiologic investigation revealed that consumption of a specific brand of chicken nuggets was statistically associated with illness. S. Typhimurium phage type 12 was isolated from an opened, consumer sample of this brand of nuggets. The chicken nuggets were a raw product which had been "flash fried." The product likely was not cooked thoroughly prior to eating. The public was warned to cook frozen food properly. There was a voluntary recall of the product.
