In February 2000, the Spokane Regional Health District in Washington State learned of a foodhandler who worked at Carl's Jr. who had hepatitis A. The food handler had handled vegetable garnishes. Over 1400 restaurant patrons were offered immune globulin, a temporary protection against hepatitis A infection. In spite of this effort, members of four Spokane area families subsequently developed hepatitis A.
