An outbreak of Salmonella serotype Give occurred among persons who ate take-out food purchased on February 21, 2010 at the Carniceria Uruapan, a meat market located in Baldwin Park (Los Angeles County), California. Fourteen cases were laboratory confirmed; 36 persons were classified as "probable" cases. Salmonella Give was also isolated from leftover carnitas obtained from ill patients. Patient and food isolates were indistinguishable by PFGE. The carnitas were also implicated as the source of infection in results of a case control study conducted by Los Angeles County Public Health investigators. Environmental investigators concluded that the carnitas were cross contaminated with raw meat, perhaps by a service tray or knife used for both raw meat and cooked food items. The facility was temporarily closed for multiple critical food handling errors.
