2010 Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis at Casa Lopez Restaurant, Ohio
In May 2010 pubic health investigators at Athens City County Health Department investigated an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis among patrons of Casa Lopez, a popular restaurant located in Athens. Cases reported eating at the restaurant beginning on April 29 and throughout the following week. Fifty six outbreak associated cases were identified. Forty two were laboratory confirmed. Seven people were hospitalized. No one died.
Consuming Chiles Rellenos was statistically associated with illness. The outbreak strain was isolated in a leftover Chiles Rellenos provided by a case-patient. An environmental investigation revealed numerous temperature abuse issues as well as the potential for cross contamination.
