An outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections occurred among hospital employees, patients, and visitors who had eaten in the hospital cafeteria between May 30 and June 4, 2003. The investigation suggested that a foodhandler with symptoms of gastroenteritis was the initial source of the outbreak. A multivariate analysis showed that cases were more likely than controls to have consumed items from the salad bar and to have eaten in the cafeteria on May 28, May 30, and/or June 3.
