1993 Multistate Outbreak of Norovirus Linked to Raw Oysters Served at Church Suppers
Two outbreaks of Norovirus occurred following church suppers where steamed oysters were served. The total number of oysters consumed was a predictor of illness. Steaming oysters did not prevent illness. The oysters had been purchased in their shells on the day of the events. The Norovirus isolated during this outbreak matched the Norovirus isolated during two earlier oyster outbreaks, in Maryland and Louisiana.
