A case of Listeria monocytogenes led to a recall in April, 2010, of Del Bueno brand Queso Fresco cheese. A routine, cheese, sampling program by the Washington State Department of Agriculture confirmed that the cheese was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Subsequent cheese sampling revealed continuing problems with contamination and further product recalls in 2010 and 2011 without additional cases. In April, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration sent a warning letter to the company noting that the company's sanitation efforts had been insufficient to remove Listeria monocytogenes. In September, 2011, Del Bueno again issued a product recall after the Washington State Department of Agriculture detected Listeria in cheese. On April 9, 2012, Del Bueno, as part of a consent decree, agreed to cease production or distribution of food until specific steps had been taken to assure product safety.
