Students and teachers of three middle schools were sickened in Racine, Wisconsin. Flour tortillas that were served in late October were implicated. Symptoms included vomiting and stomach cramps. Stool samples that were collected from the ill showed no presence of bacteria or norovirus. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction issued a warning to all schools to avoid serving the tortillas. This tortilla brand had been implicated in previous outbreaks of illness in the USA. The federal government filed suit in March, 2009, to shut down the Del Rey Tortilleria. The company had stored toxic chemicals near food processing areas, used paint buckets to store raw ingredients, and failed to take adequate steps to keep pests out of the food processing areas. Additionally employees were using unhygienic practices as per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
