In December, the management of Delfina Restaurant in San Francisco was notified of about two dozen patrons who became ill after eating at a private party held at the restaurant in December. The restaurant staff determined what each patron had eaten and analyzed the results. Their conclusion was that contaminated produce, most likely salad greens, were to blame for the outbreak. They contacted suppliers, but did not notify the public, or the health department. It wasn't until The Bay Citizen newspaper investigated and reported, on January 5, did the health department hear of the outbreak. The restaurant apparently was not obligated to report the outbreak. The organism causing the outbreak was not named.
