Five separate incidents of Brevetoxin poisoning were associated with eating clams that had been collected from Florida beaches. It seemed likely that the clams had been harvested from beaches that were not open to shellfish harvesting due to the known hazard. Brevetoxin was isolated from clam samples. Illnesses caused by brevetoxin are clinically described as Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP).
