In France, an outbreak of Salmonella I4,[5],12:i:-, was linked to a batch (Lot No. 040020900) of the Lou Mountagnard Brand La Pause Auvergnate Style dried sausage. The product was recalled by the company on May 27. On June 4, the company expanded its recall in Belgium, but not in France, to include all product expiration dates up to and including August 24, 2010. As of May 28, 88 illnesses were reported in France; there have been no published reports of illness in Belgium. This Salmonella strain is a variant of Salmonella Typhimurium. It was first noticed in Europe in the mid 1990s and is now the second most common type of Salmonella reported by European Union member countries. Cases of salmonellosis associated with this type of Salmonella tend to be more severe than average.
