Beginning in April, the Centers for Disease Control was notified of 21 outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in the United States and Ontario, Canada. These clusters were associated with events such as receptions, banquets, or restaurants. In addition an outbreak occurred on a cruise ship that had departed from Florida. Additional sporadic cases were reported in Canada and the USA. Illness onsets began in March; the last illness onsets were in June. Fresh raspberries were served at 19 out of the 21 events and were the only food common to the events. Guatemala was identified as one of the raspberry sources for these events. Mesclun lettuce was suspected to be the vehicle of infection in the two events where raspberries were not served. In the spring and summer of 1996, consumption of Guatamalan fresh raspberries had also led to cyclosporiasis outbreaks. Following the 1997 outbreak, Guatemala suspended exports of fresh raspberries to the USA.
