2000 Outbreak of Norovirus Linked to a Supermarket Bakery Georgia
A large outbreak of Norovirus occurred in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Gastroenteritis outbreaks were reported from over 30 parties and celebrations. All of the gatherings served frosted cake or frosted puff rice bars that had been purchased from a single supermarket bakery. These items had all been frosted on February 5. Approximately 80 cakes were frosted. The cake decorator had long, artificial fingernails and did not wear gloves while cake decorating. Although Norovirus was found in the stool of some ill party goers, infection in the cake decorator was never confirmed as no stool was collected from the cake decorator.
