Outbreaks of cyclosporiasis were detected in Ontario, Canada. The related illnesses were associated with events held in May, in Ontario. They were also associated with the consumption of fresh raspberries. Traceback of the raspberries served at the events implicated a Guatemalan source. This had been the third consecutive year in which outbreaks of cyclospora infections in North America had been linked to the consumption of fresh, Guatemalan raspberries. Due to the 1996 and 1997 outbreaks in the USA, in the spring of 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibited the importation of fresh Guatemalan raspberries into the USA. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency had considered the raspberries to be low risk and allowed Guatemalan raspberry imports until June 9, 2008.
