2007 Outbreak of Tetrodotoxin Poisoning Linked to Monkfish, Illinois
Two Chicago area diners were struck with tetrodotoxin poisoning after consuming a soup containing fish labeled as monkfish. The fish, imported from China and distributed by Hong Chang Corporation of Santa Fe Springs, California, was probably pufferfish, as this toxin occurs naturally in certain species of pufferfish. FDA tests on the fish indicated life threatening levels of tetrodotoxin.
