A child and two adults developed lead poisoning after eating Swad brand sindoor, an orange or red powder that is used in some traditional South Asian ceremonies. Although the product was not intended to be sold for food use, its labeling was confusing and implied that it may be used as food. Lead can be absorbed through skin so the product would have been dangerous even when it was used for its stated purpose. Traditional sindoor is made with the spice tumeric and lime and contains no lead. The product was produced by Raja Food, LLC, of Skokie, Illinois, and had been distributed to at least 17 U.S. states.
