2009 Outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus at Italian Garden Restaurant, Kansas
Several patrons of the Italian Garden Restaurant in Emporia, Kansas, developed nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea within ten hours after eating at the restaurant between June 12 and June 25. Two food items were significantly associated with illness, cannelloni and any entree that contained chicken. A sample of the cannelloni was tested and found to contain Staphylococcus aureus. The investigation showed that the cheese filling for the cannelloni, raw chicken, and ready to eat chicken were not kept at safe temperatures to prevent bacterial growth.
