Three persons who lived in the same home became ill after drinking a homemade beverage called Jamaican Malt on July 22. The drink ingredients included: beer; raw eggs; sweetened condensed milk; oatmeal; rice. Two of the ill people drank the malt just after it had been made. The third person drank it a few hours later. The beverage reportedly was refrigerated after preparation. Cultures from the beverage, the raw eggs that had been used to make the drink, and from the ill persons showed the presence of Salmonella Enteritidis, phage type 13A.
