A multistate, case-control study demonstrated a strong association between illness and consumption of Veggie Bootie, a snack of puffed rice and corn with a vegetable coating. By June 28, the Robert's American Gourmet Company had recalled the product. Most (90%) of the illnesses occurred in children who were less than three years old. Salmonella Wandsworth was isolated from four, unopened bags of the product. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from another sealed bag of the product. The company decided to recall the Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks product on July 2 because this product contained many of the same ingredients as the Veggie Bootie. Veggie Bootie was made by Keystone Food Products of Easton, Pennsylvania. The vegetable seasoning mix, added after the baking and puffing steps yielded the Salmonella Wandsworth outbreak strain.
