The Colorado Department of Public Health shut down the Kinikin Corner Dairy, LLC, after Western Slope residents became ill due to infections with Campylobacter jejuni bacteria. Over two hundred families participated in the dairy's cow-share operation. The dairy and volunteers used a bucket-milker to take the milk from the cows. The containers were transported into the processing area, where the milk was machine-separated. The milk was bottled and refrigerated for cow-sharers to pick up on an honor-system. Volunteers delivered milk to drop-off points for some program members. Major sanitary concerns were identified at the dairy. Colorado did not allow the commercial sale of raw milk, however the law allowed for cow-share programs such as this one.
