1997 Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Infections Linked to Lasagna, Washington DC
The District of Columbia, Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control received reports of 75 people from seven different events becoming ill with gastroenteritis. All the events were linked by a single supplier of lasagna. This link prompted testing of the lasagna. The lasagna was found to have Salmonella Enteritidis, phage type 8, as did stool samples from case-patients. The lasagna was found to have been stored frozen prior to cooking, and was not always thawed before reheating.
