There was a powerful and dangerous pesticide, Methomyl, in the salsa served at the Mi Ranchito Restaurant in Lenexa, Kansas. About 48 people suddenly fell ill with nausea and vomiting while dining at the restaurant. More than a dozen people were taken to the hospital. A waitress eventually admitted that while working she twice added Methomyl-based pesticide to the salsa that she had prepared. Her motive was revenge against the owner. The restaurant owner denied the presence of the pesticide on the premises. State officials cleared the restaurant to open after the restaurant passed the safety inspection and after employees underwent safety training. Methomyl was detected in salsa samples, but not from individual ingredients used to make the salsa. It was also identified in clinical specimens from ill persons.
