A cluster of Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- infections was discovered in Minnesota and 12 other states. The investigation revealed that the illnesses involved the same pulse-field gel electrophoresis pattern. Illness risk was associated with eating raw, frozen, breaded, prebrowned, and stuffed chicken entrees. The products linked to this outbreak were Milford Valley Farms Chicken Cordon Bleu and Chicken Kiev. Although many of these stuffed chicken entrees were labeled with instructions identifying the product as uncooked, and did not include microwave instruction for preparation, many did not follow the cooking instructions and reportedly used a microwave to prepare the product. Milford Valley stuffed chicken breasts were implicated in a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak in Minnesota, in early 2008.
