An 8 week old infant was diagnosed with an unusual serotype of Salmonella, Salmonella Poano. No one in the child's household or child care center had been ill. The only household pet was a python. The python arrived in the household one month before the infant's illness onset. The python had been traded for a Savannah Monitor Lizard. The monitor lizard had loose stools for the eight months that the family had owned it. Tests on the python snake, and its plastic cage, showed no Salmonella. Salmonella Poano was recovered from the monitor lizard's living quarters. The infant reportedly had no direct contact with the reptiles.
