A common caterer provided food for seven events, in Ohio, between August 27 and September 1, 2005. An E. coli O157:H7 outbreak was associated with attendance at the events, and consumption of fruit salad at these events was associated with illness. Raw steak tips had been handled on the same surface where the fruit was prepared for the salad. No infections were found in other venues where the same fruit from the same supplier had been used. The findings suggested that fruit likely was contaminated during preparation by contact with surfaces used to prepare raw beef.
