2006 Multistate Outbreak of Vibriosis Linked to Raw Shellfish
New York, Oregon and Washington reported 177 cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection between May 20 and July 31. One hundred twenty two of the cases were associated with 17 clusters based on epidemiology. Two clusters in New York City were linked to eating cooked lobster, scallops, crab, or shrimp that had been eaten in a restaurant, suggesting that the food ight have been cross-contaminated with raw shellfish. Further laboratory testing by the CDC found that most isolates were serotype O4:K12. The traceback investigation found the source of the outbreak to be shellfish beds in Washington and British Columbia. Many of the oysters had been harvested from the Hood Canal and the southwestern inlets of Puget Sound. Two oyster recalls were issued in July. Unusually warm weather may have contributed to shellfish contamination.
