During August, 2008, a listeriosis outbreak was first detected by infection control in a New York City hospital. The initial investigation found three cases, however later two additional, earlier onset, cases were found. All of the ill had pre-existing medical conditions that affected the ability of their immune systems to fight infection. The listeria outbreak strain was isolated from tuna salad prepared in the hospital kitchen.
