School staff became ill after a Teacher Appreciation luncheon served at a school in Sullivan County, New York. No students were affected by the outbreak. A volunteer who had acted as an unlicensed caterer prepared food at home for the event. All ill staff consumed meatballs in sauce as well as sausage and peppers. Laboratory samples of both the meatballs in sauce and sausage and peppers were found to contain high levels of Clostridium perfringens. Poor temperature holding and cooling and insufficient reheating were all contributing factors to this outbreak.
