Cases of gastroenteritis were reported through the Florida Poison Information Center and Florida's syndromic surveillance system. Illness was linked to attendance at a birthday party and to eating the chicken or pork served at the party. Meat, pastries, and snacks for the party had been purchased at a local chain restaurant; numerous food handling violations were found during the subsequent environmental inspection of the supermarket. Leftover chicken and pork from the party were tested and revealed the presence of Bacillus cereus. No stool samples were tested. The illnesses were consistent with Bacillus cereus intoxication; the clustered illness onset times suggested a point source exposure.
