In early September 2011 an outbreak of norovirus occurred among persons responding to a wildland fire in the Lemhi Mountain Range near Howe, Idaho. Investigators at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) conducted an epidemiologic and environmental investigation. Results of a cohort study implicated a local restaurant as the initial source of the outbreak which then spread via person-to-person transmission. In total 47 patients were identified; stool collected from two patients was positive for norovirus at the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories.
