2002 Multistate Outbreak of Listeriosis Linked to Pilgrim's Pride Foods Deli Turkey
This outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes was traced to sliceable turkey deli meat. Ill persons were infected with a matching strain of Listeria. One unopened package and 25 environmental samples from the Pilgrim's Pride Foods poultry processing plant yielded Listeria. The strain of bacteria from the product did not match the strain found in the people, however two environmental samples did grow a matching strain. This outbreak led to eight deaths and three stillbirths.
