1988 Outbreak of Listeriosis Linked to Plantation Brand Turkey Franks, Oklahoma
In December 1988 a cancer patient was hospitalized with sepsis caused by Listeria monocytogenes. She reported consuming Plantation brand turkey franks daily. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from an open package of the turkey franks in the woman's home and from unopened packages of the turkey franks obtained from a local store. Cultures of other opened foods in the woman's refrigerator were also contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes suggesting that cross contamination had occurred.
