1984 Outbreak of Trichinosis LInked to Pork, Texas
In April, a physician reported four cases of trichinosis among Laotians living in Amarillo, Texas. The investigation identified up to eight additional cases. All reported consuming pork purchased at a small local pig farm. The pigs on the farm were fed untreated restaurant refuse. In addition, the pigs were allowed to wander freely, providing opportunity for them to be exposed to animal carcasses and rodents. The farm had previously been implicated in a trichinosis outbreak in 1981. There had been a noted practice of inadequately cooking pork within the local Laotian community.
