1997 Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium Infections Linked to Queso Fresco, Washington
Queso fresco made with unpasteurized milk was implicated as the cause of a large outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 infections in Yakima County, Washington. In an effort to prevent future outbreaks, Hispanic grandmothers were organized to train the community on how to use pasteurized milk to make a safer traditional Mexican cheese.
