1982 Outbreak of Giardiasis Linked to Reno Municipal Water Supply, Nevada

An outbreak of Giardia lamblia infections occurred in Reno, Nevada, in 1982. At the time, Reno's water supply originated in part from surface water. The water was not filtered, but had undergone coagulation, settling, and chlorination. Giardia cysts were recovered from the water supply. A beaver infected with Giardia was retrieved from one of the water reservoirs.
