2010 Multistate Outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus Linked to Rolf's Patisserie Desserts
On December 23, 2010 the Illinois Department of Health announced that there had been four recent outbreaks involving dessert items from Rolf's Patisserie, in Lincolnville, Illinois. A total of 100 cases of illness were reported from four separate events in November and December. Three of the events occurred in Illinois and resulted in 30 illnesses. Seventy illnesses were reported from a single event in Wisconsin. Laboratory testing of cream cake samples showed it to be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. Food handlers revealed that fillings and frosting were occasionally prepared using bare hand contact.
