2012-2013 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg Infections Linked to Consumption of Foster Farms Chicken
A total of 134 persons infected with Salmonella Heidelberg infections were reported from 13 states. Illness onset dates ranged from June 4, 2012 and May 6, 2013. Thirty one percent were hospitalized. There were no deaths. Local, state, and federal public health and regulatory agencies determined that Foster Farms brand chicken was the most likely source of this outbreak. Testing conducted at the Washington State Department of Health Public Health Laboratories identified the outbreak strain of S. Heidelberg in four intact samples of chicken collected from homes of 3 ill persons in Washington.
