In April 2006 an outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg was associated with eating a meringue pie served at a restaurant located in Reno County, Kansas. Thirteen ill restaurant patrons were identified. Six persons were laboratory confirmed with S. Heidelberg. Illness onsets occurred between April 22 and April 26. Lemon and coconut meringue pies were implicated as the source of the outbreak by statistical analysis of case-control data. Environmental health investigators identified the potential for contamination due to cooking and cooling methods for the pies.
