Three patients, who lived in different regions of France, became infected with trichinella (confirmed by blood test) after consumption of smoked warthog ham in February, 2009 at the same hotel in Saint-Louis (Ndar) in Senegal. Upon further investigation, trichinellosis was suspected, but not confirmed, in three additional persons. The warthog ham was not available for testing. Trichinellosis following consumption of Senegalese warthog ham had been noted previously in the literature.
