Patrons of Sheetz convenience stores developed illness in early July due to Salmonella. Sheetz is a mid-Atlantic chain of gas stations with deli take-out sections. Sheetz stores are located in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio, often along interstate highways. A total of 429 outbreak associated cases was identified. One hundred twenty-six cases were hospitalized. Symptom onset occurred between July 2-27. Six different serotypes of Salmonella were isolated from case patients: Javiana (383), Typhimurium (27), Anatum (5), Thompson (4), Muenchen (4) and Group D untypable (6).

State and local health departments in collaboration with the CDC conducted a case-control study. Multivariate analysis data demonstrated a strong associated with consumption of Roma tomatoes (adjusted odds ratio - 71; 95% CI - 1.5-34). Investigators determined that Sheetz had purchased pre-sliced Roma tomatoes from a single processor, Coronet Foods, for all of its 302 stores. Salmonella Anatum was isolated from pre-sliced Roma tomatoes sampled at a Sheetz delicatessen.
