2005 Outbreak of Campylobacteriosis Linked to Unpasteurized, Raw Milk, Colorado
An outbreak of Campylobacter occurred among persons who consumed raw milk obtained through participation in a cow-share program. Illnesses occurred in at least seven households. The cow share program provided milk for 27 households. The direct sale of raw milk was not permitted in Colorado, however cow-share programs were legal. Shareholders purchased a share in a dairy herd and in exchange received unpasteurized milk. Dairies were required to be registered, but were not regulated or inspected.
