The Erie County Health Department, in Pennsylvania, identified an outbreak of Salmonella among 26 of 42 crew members onbaord the U.S. Brig Niagara, a historic sailing ship based on Lake Erie. It was unclear how the ship's crew contracted the bacteria. Illness forced the ship to cancel two fundraising events and to cut short a visit to a tall ships festival in Cleveland. The crew recovered. The Niagara is a replica of the ship that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry used to defeat the British at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
