1986 Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium Infections Linked to Pet Turtles, Ohio
Two young brothers developed Salmonella Typhimurium days after their mother had purchased a red-eared slider turtle with a two inch carapace. The same strain of Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the turtle and the turtle's water. The turtle was purchased from a pet store that had sold the turtles illegally. The distributor's invoice for the sale of the turtles to the pet store specified that the turtles were to be used for scientific purposes only.
