A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium was identified in 2008. Cases were reported from 25 states and the District of Columbia. Exposure to pet turtles was associated with illness. Three turtle environments were proved to be contaminated with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. Despite recommendations from CDC to prevent turtle-associated salmonellosis in humans, recent outbreaks suggest public education efforts have not been successful.
